The Culture of Cape Breton
Cape Breton Island is rich in culture and history. Both are strongly linked to the sea and the hardy descendents. While touring the Highlands, you can browse the Little River Fisheries and Heritage Museum, or the Little Red Schoolhouse. The North Highlands Community Museum in Cape North and the Great Hall of the Clans in St. Ann's are filled with local artifacts of the first settlers in Cape Breton. At the Giant MacAskill museum in Englishtown, you can also learn about giant Angus MacAskill, Cape Breton's true giant.
While traveling throughout the Highlands you will notice some very unique artisans and gift shops. If you drop into their shops, you will see artisans of all descriptions at their crafts; from iron works to pottery and leather works to funky hats.
At various times throughout the day you will be able to watch and hear Celtic visual and performing artists at the Gaelic College at St. Ann's. The Octagon in Dingwall offers both traditional and classical performances throughout the summer and fall.
Even more information regarding the museums and artisans studios in the Cape Breton Highlands can be found at the Northeast Highlands Chamber of Commerce website. Be sure to look at the "Things to Do" section.
